Recent and Current Events

  • BBEF Annual Meeting March 10, 2025  This is our chance to  celebrate our Giving Projects for 2024. We also look forward to approving our next round of educational projects for  Tigard-Tualatin and Sherwood schools.  We will look forward to awarding grants for women educators in Oregon completing their academic work.  Changes to the Bylaws will be presented, and approved (or not)  via electronic voting!
  • We put on an in-person  Fall Auction, along with a Virtual Silent Auction, netting over $8000 to keep providing funding for our Dictionary project and Financial Aid program. The Spring Tea brought in $4000. And the Summer Garage Sale brought in $3000. We will again this summer have our "Women Who Wine" event on June 26, 2025 at Mary's Woods Nathman building. The last one was a large success.
New Project:
Supporting Spanish Immersion Classes

Hawks View has one immersive classroom in grades K-4, with 5th grade being added next year. The teachers chose to spend their grant money from Beta Beta on books for their classroom libraries through Hameray Publishing Company. The illustrations and content were alluring with all sorts of fiction and nonfiction titles of high interest to elementary students.

Beta Beta purchased five levels. J-N, 88 titles, for $542.19 which included shipping. We stamped the books "Donated by..." before delivering to the school the first week of March.

On-Going Achievements

Dictionaries:  The Literacy Committee delivered 342 dictionaries and bookmarks to
elementary schools in the Sherwood School District. Nancy McCusker and Dorene
Steffeck delivered cases of books on Monday, October 3, and teachers will distribute them in their classrooms. This year we again included a dictionary scavenger hunt to encourage students to engage with their dictionary. Many thanks to Dorene who ordered, stamped, and stuffed the books with the scavenger hunt questions and the bookmarks.  Thanks, too, to Barbara King who provided Beta Beta brochures that we included for every third grade teacher. Nancy contacted all elementary school secretaries for class counts and set up the delivery date with each school. She also wrote a letter to third grade teachers explaining the Dictionary Project and provided information about Beta Beta and DKG. Secretaries were so pleased to see us and thanked us for once again bringing dictionaries for the third grade students.
Since 2012 - we have given out 4,377 dictionaries to 3rd grade students!!
