New Project:
Supporting Spanish Immersion Classes

Hawks View has one immersive classroom in grades K-4, with 5th grade being added next year. The teachers chose to spend their grant money from Beta Beta on books for their classroom libraries through Hameray Publishing Company. The illustrations and content were alluring with all sorts of fiction and nonfiction titles of high interest to elementary students.   https://www.hameraypublishing.com/
Beta Beta purchased five levels. J-N, 88 titles, for $542.19 which included shipping. We stamped the books "Donated by..." before delivering to the school the first week of March.

Literacy Projects -
Dictionaries:
The Literacy Committee
Dictionaries were delivered the week of October 6 to all five elementary schools in the Sherwood School District. The Literacy Committee delivered 352 dictionaries along with bookmarks to each third grade student in the district.

Along with English dictionaries, the committee delivered 48 Spanish/English dictionaries to each third grade student in the Spanish immersion program at Hawks View. Teachers in the fourth and fifth grade immersion classes each received dictionaries for their classroom libraries.

Nancy McCusker contacted secretaries in the spring to receive projected numbers for the third grade classes in the fall and then set up dates for delivery of books in the fall. Dorene Steffeck ordered the books and stored the cases during the summer. Members of the committee met in early September and stamped each book with the DKG stamp. Nancy, Dorene and Jennifer Atwood delivered books to the schools. Jennifer made sure each third grade teacher received information about DKG and Beta Beta. She also gave teachers the books for students who were absent that day.

Students were so excited to receive their books! They couldn’t wait to explore the book and find interesting facts. Teachers said that students look forward to this event each year.

Since 2012 the Literacy Committee has delivered 5,424 dictionaries to third grade students in the Sherwood School District.
